Blog

I had the man equivalent of a spa day today. Got my teeth shined up and got a hair cut. I never get haircuts; I usually just shave it, grow it out, shave it, and grow it out, and so on. My hair now has purpose and meaning.

I spent a few hours tweaking our live set today. We’re getting ready to go into phase 2 which entails running over the set again and again and again. We leave Corey’s basement tomorrow and head to a new, larger, practice space. So far everyone knows the songs without really hearing Lauren. Now we get to hear Lauren. Yay!

Grayscale is on the way here. I’m very excited to get a few more big boxes of CD’s to store in my apartment. But seriously, this is a big deal for L, her first ever independently released CD, and I will just live vicariously through her. I really am excited. This feels like closure on of the more difficult records I’ve worked on.

The record will go on sale Friday over at the Flagrant store. It will, for the obvious reasons of our show and Memorial Day, ship to you on Tuesday. Now, I know not everyone is comfortable using Paypal, but it is secure and we’ll love you for ordering the CD. If you just can’t deal – we’re converting to a merchant account in about 3 weeks where you will have the same (or at least a similar) shopping experience as you do @ Shopposi.

Our good friends Corporate X did an interview with Chris Payne on Q101 that will be airing tonight @ 10 p.m. They were going to play some Atomica Project – but I got stuck with work, Ella, and more work and was unable to get him our new disc in time. Word has it they might still try to sneak the Gravity single in during editing. Anyway, I love doing shows with these cats – they promote like I used to back in the pre-child era. Between all 3 bands, I’m getting the sense there may be a few people there. I haven’t been this excited for a show in quite some time.

As for the show – I tried and tried to find a viola or cello player and never did. We contacted old friends, got wrong phone numbers from people, we did all we could. In the end, we cut the live strings idea. Corey’s playing and Dean’s mad scratching add such a new dimension I seriously doubt anyone will be like “No string players? Fuck!” It would have been nice and we’ll see what we can do in the future. Cramming 6 or 7 people up on the Darkroom stage might not have been the best idea to begin with. As an upside, I can play bass again. Unlike past shows, we’ve actually been rehearsing for about 5 weeks. My playing is as good as it’s been in, like, forever.

What else. The CD’s are coming, the store is currently running on Paypal but will receive a major upgrade in a few weeks, this site – theatomicaproject.com is also about to go through a major redesign. Please, if you’re on the fence about it in anyway, please come to our release party. I’m not sure when we’ll be playing again and honestly, there’s no way to “get” us without experiencing it live. So do that. We’ll see you there.

And we'll happily take a 3.5 stars and a very insightful Nick Cave reference from Snob's Music

Being a Dad may have trimmed a few of my rough edges - but I can still hate on people, places, and things. Today I'm gonna hate on Office Max. Print Max, to be specific.

Print Max is about 3 miles from my house, and the closest place I can get an 11x17 print done. It's no big thing - just posters for the show.

So one my first trip I took with me 1. a PDF of my poster 2. my fonts 3. my really unhappy kid who fell asleep in the car on the way there and was grouchy as hell when she woke up. As you can see on the top poster - the fonts are clearly fucked up. This wasn't so obvious to the 300 lb. glue sniffing brain surgeon behind the counter. After going back and forth for a bit, I decided it wasn't worth the hassle and went home. Ella was getting pretty upset by this point and my attention has turned to her anyway.

Why I went back? I don't know. I figured there would be a different person behind the counter. There was. But it was another 300 lb. glue sniffing brain surgeon that kept printing my 11x17 poster out as letter size and wondering why I wasn't happy. I offered to come back behind their counter, where in about 4.1 seconds I could have changed the page setup, hit print, and instinctually found whatever porn the night guy was hiding on the computer.

Alright, I'm starting to get tired of hating. I went to Staples, paid about twice as much and damn, was it worth it. They even knew what a "Photoshop" was.
