I just finished up both the instrumental and the little jungle track this morning. I'm still agonizing over one mix but that'll only take a couple hours to reconstruct. so yeah, it's all pretty much done on my end. We still have mastering and artwork to deal with but the hard part of Grayscale is at long last, over.

I still have friends that think getting signed is the biz, the way to go. They seem to work their entire careers to obtain this lofty goal. And in my conversations with said people, in spite of all the friends I have with major label experience as well as my own experiences, they simply don’t listen. Maybe they’ll listen to Courtney Love. This is a really old article and I’m not exactly a Hole fan, but every now and again dumb people say some really smart things.

And even if you're not in a band, it's a good read.

It’s literally a state of shock around here. Having a few hours to myself is pretty mind blowing. Unfortunately, I’m running a bit of a fever, didn’t sleep too well last night – but those are only minor annoyances. I’ve been up since 5 working on our instrumental. In classic Wade fashion, I completely ditched the instrumental I was working on and started on something I feel much more mood appropriate for the record. The other was a salvaged scrap from previous writing, this one, I’m feelin’ it. I’ll be done with it in a few hours. I have 2 tracks that need some minor attention and one that needs kind of remixed but I’m starting to feel the conclusion. I’ll be happy when this is done and then . .well, I don’t know. Milkfish record? Another Scanalyzer record?

Jason (SMP) will be playing drums on the Chemlab tour and simultaneously working on a new SMP record so that’s in the future, I just hung out with Jim and Brit from iScintilla and we’ll probably start on their next record when I get back from tour. I’ve thought about seeking management for this whole producing bands business – but I’m pretty sure (unless you’re out in LA doing metal) that era has passed us by. Sometimes it feels like I’m forever trapped in a gray area, when in fact that’s exactly what the music business is and has always been. You’re either playing a song for the Queen hoping to not get beheaded or you’re doing what I do now. Playing a song for the Biography Channel hoping to not get beheaded.

Back when I was a Mac guy, I would buy every possible OS upgrade. These days, with Windows, not so much. It’s funny, I haven’t even been tempted to upgrade my current machine to Vista. The laptop I’m using on tour will have Vista installed, so I’ll get my hands dirty then but for now I’m not the least bit interested. I’m (also as a X-mac guy) just happy to have a machine that never, ever, crashes.

The bad thing about Grayscale taking so long to mix is . . well, there are lots of bad things about that. The good thing is - I got to use more and more Audio Damage plugins on the record.

They've just released a chorus and a flanger - 2 of the more basic yet essential effects. I'll be spending the next few hours going back and replacing some of the assy sounding effects I used on the record with some of the good sounding ones I have now.
