At around 1:30 a.m. last night, with Ella running 103 degree fever and crying her little eyes out, we decided not to go on this vacation. At around 5:30 this morning when her fever finally broke, we changed our minds. It took us nearly 10 hours to get here, thanks in large part to American Airlines. Bus, Train, Very long and screwed up flight, Air shuttle, Path train, 1/9 Subway, walk a few city blocks and here we are.

Took me about 3 minutes to realize the greatest difference between New York and most other U.S. cities is the availability of fresh fruit. I'm not talkin' about driving 8 miles to Whole Foods to get fruit, it's all over the place here. I'll save the rant. I'm happy to be back here, if only for a few days. This will always feel like home to us.

That said, it also took us about 5 minutes to realize that Chicago is a much more realistic urban area to raise a family in. I'd have to forget art, creativity, inspiration, and a zillion other things to survive with a child in this city. You either have to come from a wealthy family or be an absolute fiscal drone. Money is only worth so much and certainly if it's the only thing you live for . . well, good luck with all that.

We're going to the Bronx Zoo in the morning, then spending the afternoon with our favorite Uncle Percy. Should be a good time!

I’ve spent most of this weekend working on a surprisingly uptempo Atomica track. I actually wrote in in, hold on here, 1998 – right before I moved to New York. I was working with a MC named Jamaal from The High Children, Markus Vonprause was still among us, and all was well. Not really, but I’m just saying.

I’m also working on a mix for a Seattle band called “64k.” It’s everything hard noisy and fast I ever liked about electro-industrial music. Jason from SMP is working with them and brought up my name for mixing. I’m pretty psyched about how much that has been happening this year.

We leave for our New York trip on Thursday morning. We’re really just going to go – Catherine hasn’t been back since we moved and obviously Ella has never been. My amazingly cool boss is letting us stay at his condo while he’s out of town. We couldn’t ask for a better situation. The city is usually pretty calm during the summer months, especially August so we plan to just take it easy, visit some places we used to go, hit both the Central Park and Bronx zoo’s, maybe catch a Mets game with Percy and his special lady.

I just did a late mid year inventory, my career, what I’m doing, where I’m going etc. I’m pretty amazed with where I’m at and how everything looks right now. It’s been a weird ass year. While I’d love to lash out at a bunch of people, places, and things that have tried to make this year more difficult for me, I just can’t. I’m too happy and really have nothing to say about anything. How about that for a change?

I just got back from the New Haven/Black Sun trip with Stromkern last night. Had a great time! They absolutely stole the show at the festival, though the billing was a bit strange (they played 3rd). I survived a few technical problems and had the opportunity to work with the house guy @ Toad’s Place. He showed me more about live sound in one night that I could learn from months of reading about it. Overall, a real good experience. While I did feel a bit of the dreaded tour burnout, it was minimal. Good thing too – I’ll be going out in November to do sound for Chemlab and USSA (Paul Barker’s new project). We’ll see once I get back from that. I don’t think I can actually do this 6 mo. out of the year – I’d miss my daughter too much – but hopefully this will just help me get better at what I do in general, and possibly land me a job at a larger venue here in Chicago. And while I’m not cleaning up financially, it is a lot better than sitting on my ass waiting for the next commercial job to come in.

I’m going to be pretty busy with work this week, but hopefully I can spend a bit of time on the Atomica mixes. 2 to go, a couple minor tweaks on the stuff I’ve already mixed and though I’m toying with the idea of summing the whole album on an SSL – I’ll probably just run it through the “good” setting for mastering. I haven’t really touched the artwork other than the front cover, so there’s that. We’re close, people.
